Douglas manufactured the S-IVB stages at Huntington Beach. When complete, they were taken five miles to the Los Alamitos Naval Air Station and then flown to Mather Air Force Base in the new Super Guppy airplane for testing at SACTO. The Super Guppy replaced the Pregnant Guppy because the S-IVB stage had a wider diameter than the S-IV and would not fit in the Pregnant Guppy. From March 1966, the Super Guppy was the preferred means of transport. Here, the S-IVB-508 stage is seen being loaded in the Super Guppy at Los Alamitos Naval Air Station on December 30, 1968, for the flight to Mather Air Force Base. (69-72068.
